The Lion King Broadway Musical

The Disney-movie-turned-Broadway-musical The Lion King is celebrating its 16th anniversary today, November 13, 2013. The musical features an animal-based coming of age tale, where a young lion must defeat his evil uncle to regain his kingship. Since opening, the musical has been a fan favorite, and that popularity has kept its run going for all these years.

The Tony Award-winning musical is set to replace Les Misérables as the fourth longest running show on Broadway. The musical recently surpassed another Broadway milestone: It was the first show ever in Broadway history to make more than $1 billion in cumulative gross.

The family-friendly The Lion King is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, and it currently plays at the Minskoff Theatre. It features the music written by Elton John and Tim Rice for the original “The Lion King” animated feature film. The play also features additional score material written by Hans Zimmer, Jay Rifkin, Lebo M and Mark Mancina. It is directed by Julie Taymor, who was the first woman to ever win the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical.

The Minskoff Theatre is located at 200 West 45th Street, New York, NY. You can purchase The Lion King tickets from Ticket Round Up today.
